“Rad-Rad-Rad” was the adjective of choice for one of the first LA riders I met, Daniel. It could describe a testy moped that finally started, the luck of finding your jet after dropping it on pavement, or a very good plan to get burritos. Daniel was the first person to patiently explain the finer points of tuning to me and lovingly dremmeled a hole into my stock Tomos airbox while explaining the aerodynamic brilliance that was a Sprint wheel design. When that bike was stolen, he knew it broke my heart. Daniel understood that you can love a bike like you love a person and he never rolled his eyes at newbie mechanical questions. He left us too early but we remember him by welcoming newcomers and making excellent burrito plans.
Carrie Schreck has been documenting unique and incredible people since she found her first camera. She began shooting moped riders in 2009 after buying her first bike and two-stroke culture has had a huge influence on her visual style, career, and social life. She has met and photographed gangs in the US and abroad, collecting a visual history of the community. If your club would like to be photographed, please reach out through instagram @rehabforcandy
Many of the photos on this site were taken on the backs of bikes driven by people who generously give up a little speed and comfort to let her flail wildly, switching lenses and twisting to get the right shot.
When she’s not looking for bikes to photograph, she is a full-time documentary producer based in Los Angeles.
